BRITISH COLONIES in NORTH AMERICA from the best AUTHORITIES

The map includes numerous notations giving the reader some historical and environmental context. Examples of these are: "The climate of this land is a great deal more temperate than Hudsons Bay" for an area in western Ontario north of the Lake of the Woods and "Christian Sea discovered by Jn Monk in 1619" on Baffin Bay.

The presence of "Atlas to Guthries System of Geography" top center, above the neat lines, the absence of a publication statement and the absence of the engravers name all point to this being from the version of the Atlas which accompanied the 1795 edition of Guthrie's "A new system of modern geography". This map with variations in the above mentioned notes was included in at least 4 publications by Guthrie. Kershaw (680), notes this as the 4th state and cites Phillips 6007; examination of that entry reveals an error in Kershaw's reference as the copy he describes which matches our copy is mentioned in Phillips entry 6006.
