This Collection was donated to NSCC COGS by Walter Morrison, Cartographer Emeritus of COGS who was interested in antique maps as an illustration of the evolution of map making technology. It is a mixed media print collection of historical maps, atlases, periodicals and books that is focused on the early mapping of Atlantic Canada and specifically Nova Scotia. There are over 2000 items in the print collection; we invite you to follow us as we grow our digital collection.

Plan depicts alternative plans for Laying Blackfriars Road indicated by double-dotted and pricked lines. The mile-long road was finished in the last quarter of the 18th Century. Plan etches buildings, prisons, gardens, piers, wharfs, laneways, side streets, waterways, and common grounds. In addition to being published on its own, this map appeared in a number of different publications. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography describes Thomas Jefferys as "cartographer, and publisher; produced some of the most important eighteenth-century maps of the Americas; appointed Geographer to George III in December 1760"., Two different grids for longitude are indicates, the south grid is for the Ferro Meridian and the north grid is Greenwich. Two scale bars: "English Marine Leagues 20 to a Degree" and "English Miles 69 ½ to a Degree".

A map of a large swath of land from present day Québec down to Boston during the 7 years war, presumably before the fall of Québec city. Title in scrollwork cartouche at center top. Extends to below Boston and west to include Lake Ontario. Details in text starting at page 223. Historical place names and border delineations abound before the changes brought about by the Treaties of Paris in 1763 and 1783. The map's extent should include the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, and Lake Simcoe but do not., No scale bar is present on the map and London is used for the prime meridian; the scale was calculated using the map's graticule.

While the title is in German, all of the text on the map is in English. This map is based after Herman Moll's map of the area from 1736., Walter notes a publication date circa 1757. Other sources differ greatly in the publication date and the atlas in which it appears. Homann Heirs was well known for re-using plates and maps across publications. Because our copy has been skillfully cut from the sheet on which it was published, it is impossible to tie it to a specific publication. Uses the Azores as the prime meridian.

A colour washed map of the Iberian Peninsula and surrounding countries and waters engraved by R.W. Seale. A 16 point compass rose with 32 emanating rhumb lines show bearings throughout the Bay of Biscay and to the south of the important British naval base located in Minorca in the Mediterranean obtained after the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The colouration of the maps is used to differentiate some political borders, despite the noticeable absence of colour for Spain and the northern coast of Africa; care should be taken not to confuse the island of Minorca or Gibraltar as a German territories. Among the several interesting spellings of place names is Tennis for Tunis. The map title is enclosed within a heavy scroll styled cartouche.
